In 1956 Skaarup designed the first ocean-going self-unloading ship designed for
National Gypsum Company’s ocean transportation requirements along the east coast of
USA and Canada. The ship was constructed in Germany by A.G. Weser and was named
“Melvin H. Baker” in honor of the founder of National Gypsum. The Skaarup fleet
of self-unloading ships in the U.S. gypsum trade was expanded to six ships.
The “Melvin H. Baker” is still trading under Skaarup management in the
Far East.
The use of purpose-built self-unloading bulk carrier has meant enormous savings
in capital costs due to the simplicity in designing construction of our client’s
shoreside facilities. The ship’s design has afforded clients maximum efficiency
and minimum cost both for their ocean transportation requirements and their
shoreside handling of their raw materials from the ground to the factory. This
innovative design has been especially beneficial to the U.S. building material
industries.
The company is in position to design both self-unloading ships and port
facilities for new clients.
The Skaarup Group owns and operates bulk carriers and contracts annually for
the transportation of several million tons of dry bulk cargoes, including iron ore,
coal, grain, stone aggregate, gypsum, salt, coke, sulphur, phosphate rock,
woodchips and steel. For over 40 years, its
