Design of Total Transportation Facilities
In the early 50’s Ole Skaarup conceived a new transportation system for the U.S. Borax Company in California. The shipment of borax to Europe from the mine in the California desert in paper bags by railcars and high cost Liner Service was converted to a bulk movement. Silos were constructed in Los Angeles and Rotterdam and a long term contract for bulk carriers at a cost of about ten percent of the Liner rate resulted in significant savings in the total cost of transportation. Skaarup named this concept of designing transportation from place of origin to final destination TOTAL TRANSPORTATION and adopted the policy to offer his company’s clients complete shipping service to achieve the most efficient and cost effective result.
To protect the name, Skaarup formed a new company Total Transportation, LLC. This company is now operating a cargo transfer facility in New Orleans as a link in the total transportation concept. Total Transportation, LLC has owned and operated a variety of lower Mississippi mid-stream transfer, berthing and barge services. The company owns and operates a midstream grain transfer rig, capable of weighing, sampling, blending and transshipping all types of grains, with a daily transfer rate of 13,000 tons.
