Self-unloading vessels are designed to minimize the environmental impact of the loading and unloading of dry bulk cargo. Self-unloading dry bulk vessels can keep their cargo hatches closed while unloading, which protects both the environment and the cargo.

• If the cargo holds need washing after the cargo is unloaded, the waste water is held in a storage tank until it can be properly disposed of on shore.
